The Trump administration continues to perpetuate the far-fetched notion that Greenland is vital for U.S. national security. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently stated on NBC’s Meet The Press:
“For over a century, American presidents have sought to acquire Greenland, viewing it as essential to our national security. We are constructing a missile defense system there, and President Trump is strategically planning for potential Arctic conflicts. We will not delegate our national security to others.”
“In Trump 1.0, he advised Europeans against constructing Nord Stream 2 and relying on Russian energy. Ironically, European purchases of Russian oil are currently funding Russia’s operations against Ukraine. Hence, it’s imperative that America maintains control.”
If the U.S. genuinely requires Greenland for national security, it suggests a troubling deficiency in our security strategy.
This pretense of national security is unfounded and unsupported by credible intelligence.
The real threat to Greenland does not emanate from geopolitical adversaries like Russia or China.
Instead, it appears to be Donald Trump himself.
