Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business, and the world
Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the US had reached a trade agreement with Vietnam, resulting in a reduction of Vietnam’s reciprocal tariff to 20 percent. This deal makes Vietnam one of the few countries to have successfully negotiated a trade agreement with the United States.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US would impose a 40 percent tariff on any transhipping activities by Vietnam. This move signals a strong stance by the US in ensuring fair trade practices with its partners.
The remaining tariffs in place following Vietnam’s agreement with the US could have implications for other countries seeking relief from Trump’s earlier levies. The announcement of these tariffs, dubbed as “liberation day” levies, in April had created uncertainty among trading partners.
As part of the agreement, Vietnam has agreed to grant the United States total access to its markets for trade and will apply a zero percent tariff on US goods. Trump expressed optimism about the potential for US products, particularly large engine vehicles, to find success in the Vietnamese market.
“It is my opinion that the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam,” Trump wrote.
This development is ongoing, and further details of the trade agreement between the US and Vietnam are expected to emerge in the coming days.
