President-elect Donald Trump Appoints Kevin Hassett to Lead National Economic Council

White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett addresses reporters during the daily briefing at the White House in Washington, U.S. February 22, 2018.

President-elect Donald Trump has selected Kevin Hassett to head the National Economic Council, a key position that will place him at the forefront of discussions on various policy issues such as trade, taxes, and deregulation.

This appointment brings Trump one step closer to finalizing his economic team, with the U.S. trade representative position being the only remaining key role to be filled.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, a social media platform he is active on.

In addition to Hassett, Trump also appointed attorney Jamieson Greer as the U.S. Trade Representative.

Having previously served as the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during Trump’s first administration, Hassett played a significant role in advocating for corporate tax cuts and supporting Trump’s trade policies, including imposing tariffs on certain goods.

Trump’s decision to appoint Hassett comes amidst his plans to increase tariffs on Chinese imports and impose tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada, potentially impacting existing trade agreements.

With Hassett’s background as a fiscal policy expert at the American Enterprise Institute, his expertise will be crucial in shaping economic policies under the new administration.

Furthermore, Trump recently hinted at nominating Scott Bessent, a seasoned market professional, as the Treasury secretary, signaling a focus on appointing individuals with extensive financial experience to key positions.
