Donald Trump to slash workforce at US education department

The Trump administration’s recent decision to slash almost half of the workforce of the US education department has sent shockwaves through Washington and beyond. This move is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling the president’s longstanding pledge to abolish the agency altogether.

The education department announced on Tuesday that it would be laying off more than 1,300 workers, marking what it called its “final mission” in its current form. This decision comes as President Donald Trump contemplates the issuance of an executive order to shut down the department, a move that would require congressional approval to be fully enacted.

Education secretary Linda McMahon recently hinted at Trump’s intentions, stating in an interview with Fox News that the president “certainly intends to sign” an executive order that would lead to the closure of the department. This action aligns with the long-standing conservative belief that education should be primarily controlled by individual states, rather than a centralized federal agency.

The reduction in workforce, which will see the department’s staff cut from 4,133 to approximately 2,183 employees, has sparked concerns among educators and advocates. The American Federation of Teachers, in particular, has warned that lower-income families and students will be disproportionately affected by these layoffs.

The department’s responsibilities include overseeing student loans for university education, administering special grants for low-income students, and providing funding for primary and secondary education for disadvantaged and special-needs children. The cuts in staffing could potentially disrupt these crucial programs, leaving millions of students in limbo.

Despite the workforce reductions, the education department has assured the public that it will continue to fulfill its statutory obligations, including providing student loans, Pell Grants, and funding for special needs students. However, the impact of these layoffs on the education system remains to be seen.
