President Trump disagreed with Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s assessment that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapon and stated that the regime is on the verge of acquiring one. Gabbard had previously testified that Iran’s Supreme Leader had not authorized a nuclear weapons program since 2003. However, Trump expressed his belief that Iran was close to possessing a nuclear bomb during his return from the Group of Seven summit.
Israel recently launched preemptive strikes on Iran, targeting military personnel, scientists, missile capabilities, and nuclear facilities due to the perceived imminent threat from Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu warned that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon in a short time if left unchecked.
Netanyahu clarified that Israel believed Iran could have a test device within months or less than a year. According to Netanyahu, Iran was working on a secret plan to weaponize uranium, with enough enriched uranium for nine bombs. A senior Trump administration official supported the view that Iran was close to obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Trump’s endorsement of Israel’s actions against Iran has caused division within his supporters, with some like Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon opposing the move. Vice President JD Vance reassured Trump supporters concerned about foreign entanglement, emphasizing the President’s commitment to American interests.
Gabbard, who has been a key ally of Trump, has remained silent amidst Israel’s offensive on Iran. The DNI oversees the work of US intelligence agencies and Gabbard was known for her skepticism of wars prior to assuming the role. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s report did not provide evidence of Iran pursuing nuclear weapons but raised concerns about its uranium enrichment levels.
Since his 2016 campaign, Trump has been adamant about preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. He withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, leading to increased tensions with Iran. Trump denied rumors of reaching out to Iran for peace talks and emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon to save lives. Israel’s ability to completely destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities, especially the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, remains a topic of debate.
