A Legendary Moment: Liza Minnelli Makes Surprise Appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Finale

Alexis Michelle’s unforgettable Snatch Game impersonation of Liza Minnelli on Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” set the bar high for future performances, but nothing could have prepared fans for the Season 17 finale surprise – the real Liza Minnelli gracing the main stage of the show. Yes, Liza with a Z herself made a special appearance.

Host RuPaul Charles presented Minnelli with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award during the finale. Tom Campbell, a producer of “Drag Race,” expressed his gratitude, telling Variety, “The drag gods have truly blessed ‘Drag Race’ with the incredible celebrities, supporters, and politicians who have joined us over the years. This moment is a testament to that, and I humbly bow to the drag gods.”

Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include icons like Bob Mackie and Elvira, with past finale guests including former Vice President Kamala Harris. Campbell added, “Once again, we are in awe of the magic that the drag gods have brought into our lives.”

When it came time to approach Minnelli for the show, Campbell revealed that the production team always aims high when it comes to securing talent. Despite initial doubts about reaching out to Minnelli, RuPaul insisted, “Let’s get Liza.” Surprisingly, Minnelli agreed to appear on the show, especially during a time when she was receiving acclaim for her PBS documentary and New York Magazine cover feature. Campbell mentioned, “Her team are big fans of ‘Drag Race’ and they understand the heart of the show. It all fell into place seamlessly.”

Describing the atmosphere on set during Minnelli’s appearance, Campbell noted the love and kindness that surrounded the legendary entertainer. He observed, “Liza emanates love and care for others. She was accompanied by a wonderful team, including Michael Feinstein, who are all part of the musical history of America.”

One of the surprises of the evening was the presence of Minnelli’s younger brother, Joey Luft. Campbell shared, “It was a rare sight to see him in public, and Liza was very protective and loving towards him throughout the evening.”

For Campbell, having Minnelli on the show held a deep personal significance. Not only did she bring her seal of approval, but she has been a long-standing LGBTQ icon, supporting the community through her activism and fundraising efforts. Campbell reflected, “Liza has been a beacon of strength and allyship for the LGBTQ community for decades. Her presence on the show was truly a gift.”

Minnelli’s appearance on the Season 17 finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will go down in history as a legendary moment that left a lasting impact on fans and the LGBTQ community alike. Her grace, talent, and unwavering support continue to inspire and uplift those around her.
