Arizona’s Salt River Valley is a testament to the impact of urban development on Indigenous land. Once farmed by the Pima and Maricopa peoples, this region now hosts a thriving suburb of Phoenix, thanks to a complex water management system that sustains its lush greenery. The transformation of this once agricultural land into a modern community highlights the intersection of history, culture, and progress.

Renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky captured this striking contrast from a helicopter, showcasing the stark division between the natural landscape and human intervention. His work, spanning decades, aims to document the evolution of our planet under the influence of human activities. The exhibition “The Great Acceleration” at the International Center of Photography in New York City features Burtynsky’s powerful imagery, inviting viewers to contemplate the environmental consequences of urbanization.

This exhibition serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between development and conservation, urging us to consider the long-term effects of our actions on the world around us.

This shot and more of Burtynsky’s photos are being exhibited in a solo exhibition, The Great Acceleration, at New York City’s International Center of Photography until 28 September.
