Lou Benesch’s mystical watercolor paintings are a captivating blend of cosmic phenomena, spiritual symbolism, and dream-like imagery. In his upcoming solo show, “A Comforting Invisible,” at Hashimoto Contemporary, the Paris-based artist explores a world where reality merges with the fantastical.

In Benesch’s artwork, we see a trio of blackbirds hovering over a giant bed on a rugged coastline, or a many-faced ram adorned with bells and birds. These surreal compositions draw inspiration from folklore, fairytales, Greek myths, and symbols of spirituality. Each piece is a window into a parallel universe where hybrid animals, surreal landscapes, and enigmatic symbols coexist.

The artist’s use of semi-symmetric compositions creates a sense of balance and harmony in his work. The aged paper on which the paintings are created adds an element of timelessness, enhancing the dream-like quality of the imagery. Benesch’s exploration of a second, invisible realm accessed through dreams invites viewers to ponder the mysteries of existence and the power of the subconscious mind.

Symbols like eggs, sun, moon, and geometric shapes populate Benesch’s paintings, each carrying its own meaning and significance. Eggs symbolize hope, fertility, and rebirth, while the sun and moon represent duality and transition. The addition of a maze in some pieces serves as a metaphor for the journey of self-discovery and introspection.

“A Comforting Invisible” will be on display at Hashimoto Contemporary from November 9 to 30 in Los Angeles.
