As the clock ticks closer to midnight on New Year’s Eve 2025, celebrations are in full swing despite the gloomy weather in various regions.
Christchurch has already marked the arrival of the New Year with a festive mock countdown at North Hagley Park, featuring confetti cannons at 7pm. The event, which is alcohol-free, includes performances by headline act Kora and DJs, leading up to an anticipated fireworks display.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a spectacular fireworks show in Auckland, where half a tonne of fireworks is set to launch from the iconic Sky Tower. The elaborate display, consisting of 3500 individual shots, has been meticulously planned and designed over six months, culminating in a five-minute showcase at midnight.
Despite a severe thunderstorm warning in the Auckland area, scheduled to end at 10pm, the show must go on. Rob McDermott from Pyrostar International assured that safety measures are in place to ensure a successful display, even in the face of inclement weather conditions.
Not just limited to the Sky Tower, Auckland’s Harbour Bridge will also illuminate the night sky at 9pm with a dynamic light and sound show. The city is abuzz with excitement as various performances and activities lead up to the grand countdown.
In Wellington, the ‘Courtenay Carnival’ promises a vibrant celebration despite the dreary weather. The capital’s entertainment strip, Courtenay Place, has been transformed into a lively hub of live performances, street food, and parades, creating a festive atmosphere for revelers.
With each city offering its unique flair and excitement, New Zealand is gearing up to welcome the New Year with joy and anticipation, setting the stage for a memorable start to 2026.
