Cologne-based artist and designer Hannes Hummel is known for his fascination with the fusion of digital tools and nature. His previous works have explored the creation of artificial specimens, but his latest project, titled Hybrid Species, takes floral design to a whole new level of surreal beauty.

The collection consists of eighty unearthly botanical renderings that seem to belong to a realm beyond our own. These hyperrealistic flowers feature translucent petals with vibrant veins, pistils oozing with a sticky liquid, and leaves that wind like tubular tendrils, creating an otherworldly aesthetic.

Hummel’s artistic process often involves inputting photos and natural patterns such as tessellations and fractals into digital programs. For Hybrid Species, he trained an A.I. model using his own images and 3D models, exploring the creative potential of these tools without relying on copyrighted works from others. According to Hummel, the collaboration between human imagination and machine-driven innovation is what fascinates him the most in each flower design. He aims to portray nature not as it is, but as it could beβ€”reimagined, reshaped, and rendered through algorithms.

While only a fraction of Hybrid Species is showcased here, more of Hummel’s digital creations can be found on his Instagram page. Each flower in the series offers a glimpse into a world where nature defies conventional boundaries, inviting viewers to contemplate the possibilities of a digitally enhanced botanical realm.
