According to a police spokesperson, the man was traveling from Christchurch to Invercargill when a concerned citizen reported his dangerous driving on State Highway 1 around 5.20pm.
Upon spotting the vehicle in Oamaru, police pulled him over and conducted a breathalyzer test, which revealed that his blood alcohol level was over five times the legal limit.
The man was promptly arrested, charged with excessive breath alcohol, and taken into custody. He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Authorities expressed gratitude to the vigilant individual who alerted them to the man’s reckless behavior and used this incident as a reminder for all drivers to prioritize safety during holiday weekends.
Southern Police emphasized the importance of road safety and highlighted the key factors that contribute to accidents, including seatbelt usage, impairment from substances, distractions, and speeding.
