Adis Spahija and Michael Valentin (Chicago Police Department, Casey & Rios)

Lincolnwood Man Sentenced to Probation for Fatal West Rogers Park Crash

A tragic incident that occurred in West Rogers Park two years ago has resulted in a Lincolnwood man receiving a sentence of probation after pleading guilty to reckless homicide by motor vehicle. Adis Spahija, 21, will serve 24 months of probation along with 400 hours of community service for his involvement in the crash that claimed the life of 33-year-old Michael Valentin, according to court records.

According to prosecutors, the fatal crash took place in September 2023 when Spahija was allegedly speeding eastbound on Peterson Avenue in a 2014 Volkswagen Touareg. As the traffic signal at California Avenue turned yellow around 7:26 a.m., an 18-year-old woman driving westbound attempted to turn south onto California. It was at this moment that Spahija entered the intersection and collided with her vehicle, causing both cars to veer onto the sidewalk where they struck Valentin, who tragically lost his life at the scene.

The charging documents from prosecutors suggested that Spahija was driving recklessly above the speed limit and disregarded a traffic signal at the time of the collision. Despite remaining at the scene following the crash and cooperating with authorities, Spahija was initially cited for traffic infractions. Subsequent investigations revealed that Spahija tested negative for DUI voluntarily.

It wasn’t until six months after the incident that prosecutors decided to file reckless homicide charges against Spahija. In addition to the probation and community service, Judge James Novy also mandated that Spahija attend a victim impact panel and adhere to standard probation conditions.
