Nick Offerman recently spoke out in an interview with IndieWire, addressing the misconception that his iconic “Parks and Recreation” character, Ron Swanson, would be a supporter of Donald Trump. Offerman played Ron on the popular NBC sitcom for all seven seasons, and he made it clear that only “dumb people” believe that Ron would have voted for Trump just because he owns a shotgun.

In the interview, Offerman explained that MAGA supporters often assume that Ron must align with their beliefs because of certain characteristics, such as his love for capitalism. However, Offerman revealed that the show’s creator, Mike Schur, confirmed that Ron would have despised Trump. According to Offerman, Ron would have viewed Trump as an “absolute idiot” for going into public service, a move that contradicts capitalist principles.

Furthermore, Offerman emphasized that Ron would have disapproved of Trump’s disrespectful behavior towards women and others, as Ron is depicted as a good person on the show. The actor has always been protective of Ron’s character, especially after the series ended. Earlier this year, Offerman defended the LGBTQ+ community against homophobia when Michael Flynn Jr. attempted to use a doctored clip of Ron to denounce Pride Month.

Flynn Jr. shared a manipulated clip on social media, showing Ron throwing a rainbow flag into a dumpster. However, Offerman quickly responded, pointing out that Ron was the best man at a gay wedding in the series finale. This incident highlighted the importance of accurately representing characters and their values, especially when it comes to sensitive issues like LGBTQ+ rights.

Overall, Offerman’s comments serve as a reminder that fictional characters, like Ron Swanson, can have clear moral compasses and beliefs that may not align with those of real-life figures like Donald Trump. It’s essential to understand and appreciate the complexities of characters and the values they represent, rather than making assumptions based on surface-level traits.
