A man in Dunedin was caught by police driving at an alarming speed of 142kmh in a 60kmh zone while rushing to the supermarket before it closed. The 30-year-old driver was pulled over by officers on Cumberland St at 9pm on Saturday after accelerating heavily near the Jetty St overbridge.

When questioned by the police, the man claimed he was in a hurry to reach the supermarket before it shut down, although it remains unclear why he needed to get there so urgently. As a result of his reckless driving, his license was suspended for 28 days, and he will face charges of driving at a dangerous speed in Dunedin District Court.

In a separate incident earlier that day, another 30-year-old man was found driving erratically on the grass field at Kensington Oval. Upon inspection, the man was discovered to be under the influence of alcohol, with a breath alcohol level of 741mcg, well above the legal limit of 250mcg. He too received a summons to appear in court for driving while intoxicated.

Additionally, a teenager was caught by police for reckless driving after leaving a liquor store on Great King St. The 18-year-old accelerated aggressively, spun his tires, and ignored a stop sign before being stopped by the authorities. He was found to have a breath alcohol level of 582mcg, which is illegal for individuals under 20 years old. The teenager will also have to appear in court for charges related to his irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers of speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. It is crucial to prioritize safety on the roads to prevent accidents and protect lives.
