The team effectively shut down Southern’s playmaker Mackenzie Palmer, not giving him the space he needed to organize the backline.
The change in venue from Bathgate Park to the University Oval worked in Kaikorai’s favor, as they had a dry ground and sunny conditions which helped neutralize Southern’s scrum advantage.
Despite Southern leading 19-14 at halftime, Kaikorai capitalized on their opponent’s mistakes and inaccuracies to clinch the win.
In another game at the University Oval, Taieri dominated Alhambra-Union with an impressive 88-12 victory.
Taieri showcased their defensive prowess and clinical ability to convert pressure into points, while also displaying flair and creativity in their attacking play.
The Whaanga brothers, Matt and Josh, were instrumental in Taieri’s success, with winger Marc Roony scoring three tries and lock Sam Fischli making significant contributions behind the defensive line.
Fullback Reef Newdick and first five Sam Waitoa also had standout performances, with Waitoa scoring 23 points including a try and nine conversions.
Despite a strong start from Alhambra-Union, Taieri pulled away in the second half, with the Thode twins and Connor Aldrich providing some highlights for the losing side.
Harbour, Dunedin, and Taieri were victorious in the other games, with Harbour defeating Zingari-Richmond 82-24 and Dunedin beating Green Island 34-22.
