Electric School Buses: The Best Choice for Our Kids and Communities

The iconic yellow school bus is a common sight on the streets of the United States, transporting millions of children safely to and from school every day. While the exterior color of school buses has remained the same classic yellow, there have been significant advancements under the hood in recent years. School buses are now leading the way in the transition to electric heavy-duty vehicles, offering benefits for our children, communities, and the environment.

Electric buses have emerged as the top choice for clean school transportation, with 92% of recent program funding being allocated to support the purchase of electric zero-emission school buses and charging infrastructure. This shift towards electric buses is a significant step in reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality for everyone.

A recent analysis conducted by Dave Cooke compared various types of school buses, taking into account their climate and public health impact. The results showed that electric school buses are by far the cleanest option, reducing global warming pollution by over 80% compared to traditional gasoline, diesel, propane, or natural gas buses. As the electricity grid continues to transition towards renewable sources, the environmental benefits of electric buses will only increase.

In addition to lower climate emissions, electric school buses also contribute to cleaner air by reducing pollutants like particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. This leads to a decrease in health risks and associated costs related to air pollution exposure, benefiting not only the children riding the buses but also the communities they travel through.

While propane buses have received some funding through the Clean School Bus Program, electric buses remain the superior choice in terms of environmental impact. Electric buses outperform propane buses in reducing both climate pollution and air pollution-related health costs, making them the ideal option for school transportation.

With the Clean School Bus Program already making strides in deploying electric buses in school districts across the country, the future of school transportation looks cleaner and more sustainable. As more districts transition away from traditional combustion technologies like diesel towards electric buses, the air quality in our communities will continue to improve, creating a healthier environment for our children and future generations.
