Three decades ago, Elizabeth Berkley took on the role of Nomi in Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls—a film that remains contentious in Hollywood. You know the plot: the melodramatic erotic-thriller filled with memorable quotes like, “It’s a Versayce!” Though it was met with harsh criticism upon release, it has since transformed into a cult classic. “Over the years, I’ve had countless fans approach me to share what my character Nomi and her resilience have meant to them,” Berkley shares with Vogue. “Recently, I saw a video of Donatella Versace showcasing a dress while quoting my lines. I never expected to witness such a moment!”
The film’s gradual acceptance has been surprising yet gratifying. It drew such biting reviews that it nearly derailed Berkley’s career. “The time after the film’s release was challenging. Nowadays, such treatment of young actresses wouldn’t be tolerated,” she remarks. A fresh wave of admiration from a new audience has given her a chance to reconnect with fans. On October 9th, Berkley will be hosting a special event in Austin, Texas, coordinated by Live Nation, to commemorate the film’s anniversary. “I’m truly thankful that it’s embedded itself into popular culture,” she expresses. “The LGBTQ+ community especially has embraced this movie from the start.”
“I appreciated the interplay between the fabrics and textures, alongside the subtle hints of the undergarments,” Berkley mentioned about the recent Mugler show. “There was a breathtaking gold suit that left a lasting impression, and another suit adorned with a beaded top reminiscent of classic Las Vegas performances, modernized with a fresh twist.”

To further enhance her career revival this month, Berkley made a splash as a VIP guest at Paris Fashion Week. She took a front row seat at the spring 2026 Mugler show—a fitting venue, as designer Miguel Castro Freitas drew inspiration from the glamour of classic cinema this season, delivering a nod to Showgirls. “I enjoyed learning about Miguel’s passion for film and storytelling,” Berkley shares, recalling her fittings with the designer just days before the event in Paris. “As an actress, witnessing his mood board was akin to seeing a film’s storyboard come to life.” She was particularly drawn to the collection’s portrayal of womanhood. “Each look seemed like a distinct character, radiating different emotions and energies, all celebrating various facets of being a contemporary woman—combining strength with vulnerability.”
Naturally, Berkley wanted to reflect this essence in her Paris appearance. Initially slated to wear a custom Mugler dress, she stumbled upon an alternative that caught her by surprise. “We discovered a striking suit hanging on the rack and I tried it on just for fun,” Berkley recalls. “Its resemblance to my ideal silhouette was uncanny—it felt like it was made for me. The entire room gasped. It was an obvious choice.” Subsequently, she collaborated with the Mugler team on accessories, opting for sheer gloves, stockings, and a single crystal chandelier earring. “The singular earring was chic and one-of-a-kind; I adored the perfectly-imperfect asymmetry,” Berkley enthuses. (She loved it so much, she wore it during lunch at L’Avenue right after the show.)
