Ellen Pompeo, known for her role as Meredith Grey in the hit TV show “Grey’s Anatomy,” recently shared a heartwarming story about her co-star Eric Dane. In a pre-taped message at the ALS Network Champions for Cures & Care Gala, Pompeo revealed that she immediately reached out to Dane after learning about his ALS diagnosis.
Pompeo reminisced about the instant chemistry she had with Dane when he joined the cast as Mark “McSteamy” Sloan in Season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy.” She expressed her love and admiration for him, stating that she fell in love with him from the moment they met on set. Upon hearing about Dane’s diagnosis, Pompeo wasted no time in texting him and offering her support. To her surprise, Dane called her back within 30 seconds.
During their emotional phone call, Pompeo reassured Dane that she was there for him and willing to help in any way she could. She expressed her love for him and praised his courage in the face of adversity. Many of Dane’s former cast members from “Grey’s Anatomy” have also shown their support for him since he went public with his diagnosis.
Patrick Dempsey, who played Derek Shepherd on the show, shared that he had been in touch with Dane and commended his bravery. Dempsey described Dane as a wonderful human being with a great sense of humor and intelligence. He expressed his sympathy for Dane and his family, acknowledging the challenges they are facing.
Despite Dane’s physical limitations, he continues to work and remains positive about the future. He was set to receive the Advocate of the Year Award at the gala but was unable to attend due to the effects of ALS. Dane first disclosed his diagnosis in 2025 and has since been using his platform to raise awareness about the disease.
As Dane navigates his journey with ALS, his friends and colleagues from “Grey’s Anatomy” stand by his side, offering their love and support. The bond forged on set continues to shine through in times of hardship, showcasing the true meaning of friendship and solidarity.
