Woman Escapes Robbery Attempt at West Side Fried Chicken Restaurant
A dramatic incident unfolded at a Popeyes restaurant on the West Side of Chicago late in the evening on June 23. A man, identified as 28-year-old Micah Harris, attempted to rob the establishment at gunpoint, causing chaos and fear among the employees.
As the employees were closing up for the night at Popeyes on West Roosevelt Road, Harris entered through the drive-thru window brandishing a gun. One quick-thinking female employee, sensing danger, managed to escape and seek help from the authorities.
Inside the restaurant, Harris terrorized the remaining employees as he tried to gain access to the safe. He threatened, pushed, and ordered them around, using violence to intimidate them into revealing the location of the safe. One employee, a 58-year-old woman, was held at gunpoint and threatened with death if she did not comply with Harris’s demands. Another employee, a 44-year-old man, was physically assaulted by Harris in his quest for the safe’s location.
Unaware that help was on the way, Harris continued his violent rampage until the employee who had escaped managed to flag down a passing Chicago police patrol car. She alerted the officers to the situation inside the restaurant, prompting them to take immediate action.
Upon entering the establishment, the officers found Harris behind the counter, attempting to flee out the back door. They apprehended him as he emerged with a loaded gun in his hand, preventing any further harm from occurring.
Following his arrest, Harris has been charged with attempted armed robbery, aggravated armed kidnapping, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and multiple counts of unlawful restraint. Judge Deidre Dyer has ordered him to be detained pending trial.
This incident serves as a reminder of the bravery and quick thinking of the individuals involved, as well as the swift response of law enforcement in ensuring the safety of all those affected.
