In late December 2004, tragedy struck at the Republica de la Cromagñon nightclub in Buenos Aires during a performance by the rock band Los Callejeros. The venue was overcrowded with more than 4,000 fans in a space meant for only 1,500 people. To make matters worse, several exits were padlocked, preventing people from escaping without paying.

The disaster unfolded when a fan ignited a flare inside the club, a common practice at Argentinian events. The flare set fire to the highly flammable decorations made of materials like styrofoam. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the building in a deadly inferno. The lack of proper fire safety measures, overcrowding, and blocked exits led to chaos and panic as attendees tried to escape the blazing nightclub.

The Cromagñon nightclub fire remains one of the most tragic events in Argentinian history, claiming the lives of 194 people and injuring nearly 1,500 others. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the disaster, a poignant stop-motion short film titled “LONA” was created. Directed and animated by Malena Martinez, the film pays tribute to the lives lost in the tragedy.

“LONA” tells the story through animated pairs of sneakers dancing to cheerful music, symbolizing the joy of gathering with friends to enjoy a concert. As the shoes dance, flowers begin to bloom from inside them, serving as a vibrant reminder of the souls lost in the fire. The film captures the essence of community, friendship, and remembrance in a touching and artistic way.

The stop-motion animation in “LONA” beautifully encapsulates the resilience and spirit of the Argentinian people in the face of tragedy. It serves as a powerful tribute to those who lost their lives in the devastating nightclub fire, honoring their memory through art and creativity. The film’s emotive storytelling and poignant visuals evoke a sense of loss and remembrance, resonating with audiences on a deep and personal level.
