Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is being considered as a potential future manager for the England national team, as reported by The Telegraph. Following Gareth Southgate’s departure after Euro 2024, Lee Carsley has taken the reins of the senior side on an interim basis.
Carsley, the former England Under-21 manager, has made a strong start in his new role, securing victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland with 2-0 scorelines. His impressive performances have put him in contention for the permanent job, with the FA exploring various options for the role, including Lampard.
Lampard finds himself among a four-man shortlist that includes the likes of Pep Guardiola, Graham Potter, and Eddie Howe. While Guardiola is the dream candidate for the FA, his contract with Manchester City is set to expire next summer, making his availability uncertain. Potter, who left Chelsea in April 2023, remains a strong contender despite his previous stint at Stamford Bridge not meeting expectations. Howe, currently with Newcastle United, has hinted that he may not be interested in the England job.
Other potential candidates like Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino have also been considered, but Klopp is taking a sabbatical and Pochettino has taken on a new role with the US Men’s team.
Frank Lampard has been out of a managerial job since leaving Chelsea for the second time in May 2023. His initial spell with the Blues saw him guide the team to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in his debut season. However, his second campaign was fraught with challenges, leading to his dismissal in January 2021.
After a brief stint at Everton, Lampard returned to Chelsea last season as a caretaker manager before parting ways with the club once again in May. Despite his ups and downs, Lampard remains a respected figure in English football and could be a strong candidate for the England managerial position.
As the FA continues to assess their options for the role, the decision on who will lead the Three Lions into the future remains uncertain. With Lampard among the frontrunners, the footballing world eagerly awaits the announcement of England’s next manager.
