Epic Games and Spotify test Apple’s new App Store rules

Epic Games and Spotify are pushing the boundaries of Apple’s App Store policies by submitting apps for review that would have previously been rejected. Both companies recently submitted updated versions of their apps to Apple’s App Review, marking a bold move in response to the tech giant’s recent legal battle with Epic Games.

For Epic Games, this submission could mean the return of Fortnite to the App Store. The popular game was removed in 2020 after Epic challenged Apple’s rules by enabling direct payments in Fortnite, a move that led to the termination of Epic’s account and the subsequent antitrust lawsuit against Apple.

Meanwhile, Spotify is looking to introduce new features that would benefit its users, such as the ability to purchase individual audiobooks directly through the app. Premium subscribers would also have the option to buy additional hours for audiobook listening, allowing them to exceed the monthly limit of free hours. This update comes on the heels of Apple’s recent approval of the Amazon Kindle app, which now includes a “Buy Book” button for the first time.

With Apple’s approval of Spotify’s pricing information for subscription plans and other recent changes, it’s clear that the tech giant is making strides to comply with the court’s orders in the antitrust case. The updated App Store policies, which were rolled out last week, aim to create a more competitive environment for developers and allow new business models to flourish.

The recent legal battle between Apple and Epic Games highlighted the issue of in-app purchases and payment processing. Apple’s previous restrictions on developers linking to external websites for purchases and the hefty commission fees were deemed anticompetitive by the court. As a result, Apple was forced to remove these barriers and allow developers to link to web purchase options without additional restrictions or commissions.

The changes in the App Store policies have opened up new opportunities for developers to innovate and thrive in the digital marketplace. It’s expected that more companies will follow in the footsteps of Epic Games and Spotify to take advantage of these new policies and enhance the user experience for their apps.

Overall, the evolving landscape of the App Store reflects a shift towards a more open and competitive environment, benefiting both tech giants and smaller developers alike. As companies continue to adapt to these changes, users can expect to see more innovative features and services available on their favorite apps.
