Epiroc, a Swedish mining and infrastructure equipment maker, has joined forces with Ericsson in a global agreement aimed at enhancing LTE and 5G connectivity within the mining sector. This partnership will see Ericsson’s cutting-edge technology being integrated into Epiroc’s global customer centres, bolstering connectivity and digital solutions in the mining industry, both underground and on the surface.

The primary goal of this collaboration is to assist customers in advancing automation, digitalisation, and operational efficiency. By expanding Epiroc’s range of technology-agnostic digital and automation solutions, the partnership will provide customers with crucial connectivity necessary for safer, more efficient, and productive operations.

The merger of Ericsson’s cellular technology expertise with Epiroc’s industry knowledge and global reach will offer customers an integrated solution for establishing essential wireless networks. Epiroc’s digital solutions division president, Paul Bergström, emphasized the growing importance of connectivity in mining operations as automation and digitalisation continue to evolve.

The agreement builds upon a previous collaboration between Epiroc and Ericsson initiated in 2018, focusing on exploring LTE and 5G for mining applications. This new step is expected to simplify the deployment of foundational wireless infrastructure for mining clients looking to scale automation, telematics, and predictive maintenance.

By enhancing Epiroc’s role as a productivity ally, the partnership will provide customers with solutions such as automation, collision avoidance, connectivity, data-enabled machinery, and situational awareness. This essential connectivity is crucial for maximizing the benefits of Epiroc’s advanced digital offerings.

The collaboration between Ericsson and Epiroc meets the increasing need for connected and resilient operational technology ecosystems. Ericsson Enterprise Wireless Solutions product and engineering head, Pankaj Malhotra, highlighted the operational impact this partnership will have on mining customers, promoting safer operations, higher productivity, and greater efficiency.

The partnership signifies an important step in building the connected ecosystems necessary for modern industrial enterprises. This collaboration between Epiroc and Ericsson is pivotal in driving innovation and connectivity within the mining industry, ultimately leading to safer, more efficient, and productive operations.
