Esaí Alfredo: Capturing the Enigmatic in Oil Paintings

In a memorable 1979 episode of Saturday Night Live, Steve Martin and Bill Murray take the stage dressed as tourists, repeatedly asking, “What the hell is that?” Their curiosity piques our interest as they gaze beyond the camera, leaving the answer to our imagination. Miami-based artist Esaí Alfredo channels this sense of wonder and mystery in his large-scale oil paintings, where male figures observe distant horizons or mysterious events just out of view.

Alfredo’s work is inspired by the cinematic screen and a love for the unknown. His figures stand against vibrant backdrops, reminiscent of Miami Vice’s pastel hues and glowing contrasts. These colors serve as tools for storytelling, drawing from influences like old movies, science fiction, and the cinematography of Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock.

The artist describes his paintings as snapshots from a larger narrative, akin to freeze frames from an enigmatic story. Each piece is a composition of real people and objects, carefully planned out in sketches and color studies before being translated onto canvas. The resulting images capture moments of wonder, fear, and confusion, as characters react to mysterious objects falling from the sky.

Alfredo’s recent exhibition, titled STARLESS, showcased a series of paintings that explore these themes further. Figures in surreal landscapes gaze up at a sky devoid of stars, reacting with a mix of emotions to the unknown phenomena around them. Each painting is a piece of a larger puzzle, hinting at a story that is still unfolding.
