The European Union is making preparations for a “plan B” in case the Trump administration abandons Ukraine peace talks and seeks closer ties with Moscow. This move comes as US President Donald Trump has been unable to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in his first 100 days in office.

EU’s high representative for foreign and security policy, Kaja Kallas, expressed concerns about the US potentially leaving Ukraine and pursuing a deal with Russia. This has raised fears that some EU countries may push for the lifting of economic sanctions against Russia, a move that could have significant implications for European businesses.

Amidst these uncertainties, European officials are exploring alternative strategies to maintain pressure on Russia, should Hungary block the extension of EU sanctions in July. Kallas emphasized the importance of keeping all member states aligned on this issue, while also acknowledging the existence of a backup plan to uphold economic sanctions.

One possible scenario involves individual EU nations adopting sanctions to bypass a Hungarian veto, as demonstrated by Belgium’s decision to freeze Russian state assets on its soil. However, Kallas stressed the need to prioritize ongoing efforts to preserve the existing sanctions regime through collaboration with international partners.

Despite discussions in some EU capitals about aligning with a potential shift in US policy towards Russia, Kallas underscored the importance of supporting Ukraine and preventing further aggression from Moscow. She emphasized that any recognition of Crimea as part of Russia would be unacceptable to EU member states, reiterating the stance that “Crimea is Ukraine.”

In the event of a US withdrawal from the peace process, Europe could provide financial assistance to Ukraine, although military support would be more challenging to replace. Kallas highlighted the ongoing diplomatic efforts to persuade the US to prioritize ending the conflict in Ukraine and prevent Russia from achieving its objectives.

As the situation evolves, Kallas emphasized the need for the US to exert pressure on Russia to halt the conflict and uphold international norms. She urged President Trump to leverage the tools at his disposal to prevent further bloodshed and ensure that Ukraine’s sovereignty is respected.

In conclusion, the EU is bracing for potential shifts in US foreign policy towards Russia and Ukraine, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security. The delicate balance between diplomatic engagement and maintaining pressure on Russia remains a key challenge for European policymakers in the coming months.
