The situation in the northern Gaza Strip has been described as “apocalyptic” by top United Nations officials as Israel continues its military offensive against Hamas militants in the region.

In a joint statement signed by acting UN aid chief Joyce Msuya, heads of UN agencies, including UNICEF and the World Food Programme, and other aid groups, it was stated that the entire Palestinian population in North Gaza is facing imminent risks of disease, famine, and violence.

Israel initiated a widespread military operation in northern Gaza last month, prompting concerns from the United States about the potential impact on civilians in the area.

The statement emphasized the challenges faced by humanitarian aid organizations in providing assistance to those in need due to access constraints and safety concerns. It called on all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians and urged Israel to halt its assault on Gaza and allow humanitarian efforts to proceed.

While Israel’s UN mission declined to comment on the statement, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, previously addressed the Security Council, denying allegations of aid theft by Hamas and emphasizing the amount of aid delivered to Gaza over the past year.

Concerns over the humanitarian conditions in northern Gaza were also raised during a conversation between USAID Administrator Samantha Power and Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael Herzog. The United States has set a deadline for Israel to improve the situation in Gaza or potentially face restrictions on US military aid.

As the situation in northern Gaza remains dire, efforts are being made to address the urgent needs of the population and ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the conflict.
