A former senior executive of the Hawks is facing charges of embezzlement following allegations of a long-running scheme to defraud the NBA franchise. Lester Jones has been accused of fraud and stealing $3.8 million from the Hawks after an audit conducted by the team revealed evidence of his illicit activities. The charges were brought against Jones by federal prosecutors, and he pleaded not guilty before being released on a $10,000 bond.

Jones, who had been a part of the organization’s finance department for nearly a decade, is alleged to have misused his position to fund a luxurious lifestyle at the expense of the Hawks. He reportedly had control over the team’s American Express card account and issued corporate cards for his personal use.

One of the instances cited in the indictment involves Jones allegedly having the Hawks cover a $229,968.76 American Express credit card bill under the pretense of a stay at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. However, it is claimed that there was no such bill from the hotel. Additionally, Jones is said to have used some of the embezzled funds to purchase expensive gifts for another former Hawks employee with whom he was romantically involved.

Prosecutors have also alleged that Jones used the stolen money to buy a Porsche, take trips to various locations such as the Bahamas, Hawaii, Thailand, and Switzerland, as well as purchase concert tickets. To conceal his actions, Jones purportedly falsified emails and tampered with reports.

Both the Hawks and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia declined to provide comments on the matter to The Athletic. Furthermore, an attorney representing Jones did not respond to requests for comment from the outlet.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of financial oversight and internal controls within organizations to prevent fraudulent activities. Embezzlement schemes can have serious consequences for both the individuals involved and the entities they defraud. It remains to be seen how the legal proceedings against Jones will unfold and what repercussions he may face if found guilty of the charges.
