The recent case involving former high-ranking aide Linda Sun and her husband Christopher Hu has shocked the nation. Accused of working as Chinese agents, the couple allegedly received extravagant gifts and rewards in exchange for advancing Beijing’s agenda in New York. The federal prosecutors have unsealed an indictment in Brooklyn federal court, charging Sun and Hu with violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy.

According to the indictment, Sun and Hu received millions of dollars in kickbacks from Chinese officials and used the money to purchase a $4.1 million mansion in Manhasset, a $2 million luxury condo in Honolulu, and a fleet of luxury cars, including a 2024 Ferrari Roma. The couple’s lavish lifestyle was allegedly funded by their clandestine activities on behalf of the Chinese government.

Among the gifts listed in the indictment are “Nanjing-style salted ducks” that were delivered to Sun’s parents’ home by a personal chef for a high-ranking Chinese official. The couple also received tickets to exclusive events, such as the Chinese National Traditional Orchestra concert at Carnegie Hall and the Guangzhou Ballet performance at Lincoln Center. Additionally, they were treated to VIP suite access at a sporting event and paid-for travel to China, including a stay in a presidential hotel suite previously used by Michelle Obama.

Hu’s business ventures in China reportedly benefited from Sun’s political connections, generating millions that were laundered back to the US. Despite their modest incomes on paper, the couple managed to purchase luxury properties and vehicles, including the Manhasset mansion, Honolulu condo, Ferrari Roma, Range Rover, and Mercedes.

Prosecutors have taken steps to seize the couple’s assets, including the properties, cars, and cash from various accounts. The case has shed light on the influence of foreign agents in the US and the lengths to which some individuals will go to advance a foreign government’s agenda. Sun and Hu’s trial is set to be a closely watched affair, as the couple faces serious charges that could result in significant jail time if convicted.
