Former NHL player Nick Kypreos has suggested that Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly should consider waiving his no-move clause in order to facilitate a trade. This recommendation comes after the Maple Leafs faced another disappointing early playoff exit, losing to the Florida Panthers in Round 2. Despite Rielly starting the majority of his playoff shifts in the offensive zone, the team was still outshot and outscored while he was on the ice, according to Natural Stat Trick.

With Rielly signed for five more years at a $7.5 million cap hit and holding a full no-move clause, he has the power to dictate his future destination. However, Kypreos argued on Sportsnet 590’s “The FAN” podcast that Rielly should be open to a trade if it becomes evident that there is no long-term future for him in Toronto. Kypreos stated, “I honestly believe that whether you have a no-move or not, if it looks like it’s not going anywhere, or there’s not a mutual feel between two parties — in this case, Morgan and the Leafs — that we’re on the same page, then Morgan should consider lifting his no-move.”

Kypreos pointed to the example of Seth Jones, who saw a resurgence in his career after being traded from Chicago to Florida following a request for a trade. He emphasized that a change of scenery could potentially reinvigorate Rielly’s career as well. The Maple Leafs are facing significant offseason decisions, with speculation surrounding the futures of Mitch Marner and John Tavares. Rielly’s status is also something to watch, as Toronto may consider making changes following another disappointing playoff run.

NHL analyst Justin Bourne echoed Kypreos’s sentiments, suggesting that Rielly may not be worth his $7.5 million cap hit moving forward. Bourne acknowledged Rielly’s abilities but questioned whether he justifies his salary. The decision on whether Rielly will remain in Toronto ultimately lies with him, as he holds the power over his future thanks to his no-move clause. It will be interesting to see if both parties can come to an agreement on what the best course of action will be for Rielly and the Maple Leafs.

In conclusion, the decision for Morgan Rielly to potentially waive his no-move clause and explore a trade will depend on whether it is in the best interest of both him and the team. As the offseason progresses, it will be intriguing to see how this situation unfolds and what the future holds for Rielly and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
