At the Oxford Literary Festival, Lownie presented allegations concerning the late Queen Elizabeth’s mental state and Andrew’s actions during her last years, leading up to her passing in 2022 at age 96.
These claims arise amidst the ongoing repercussions of Andrew’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein, which resulted in his expulsion from royal responsibilities and the revocation of his honorary titles by his brother, King Charles III, aged 77.
A royal insider remarked, “The notion that Andrew Windsor intimidated his devoted mother during her final years is likely to disturb many who admired the late Queen’s leadership.”
The insider continued, “Lownie’s assertion that he took advantage of her ‘completely gaga’ state is particularly severe, prompting further discussion about the true events inside the palace.”
A palace source commented, “Even as mere allegations, the language used is incendiary and highlights how controversial Andrew’s role has become in the broader monarchy narrative.”
Lownie stated in his book, “Towards the end of Queen Elizabeth’s life, unbeknownst to many, she was entirely gaga. Andrew would visit her and coerce her into decisions. Consequently, during her last years, Charles effectively governed, not the Queen.”
He further claimed, “Sadly, she facilitated this. The entire family facilitated this—they were aware.”
The author suggested that the Queen’s fondness for Andrew—as her presumed favorite son—might have influenced her decision to back him despite growing scandals.
Lownie proposed that this relationship affected decision-making processes within the royal household during her concluding years.
