EXCLUSIVE: How Jeremy Piven is Using Stand-Up Comedy to Grieve the Loss of His Mother After Her Tragic Passing Earlier This Year

Notable actor Jeremy Piven is turning to humor to navigate through his grief after the passing of his mother earlier this year.

In an exclusive interview with RadarOnline.com, the veteran of over 100 film and television projects discussed his choice to step back into live theater, touring the nation with his new stand-up comedy connoisseurship.

Piven, famed for his portrayal of the witty and cynical Hollywood agent Ari Gold in HBO’s Entourage, earned three consecutive Emmys for this iconic role. He often finds himself recognized in public with fans shouting his character’s memorable line “LLOYD!”

However, the 60-year-old star has shifted gears from film and television to return to his early theatrical roots, inspired by his mother, Joyce, who passed away at the impressive age of 94.

In his candid discussion with RadarOnline.com, Piven shared that his journey into stand-up is therapeutic, aiding in his healing.

“Being on the road, whether it’s ordering breakfast while dealing with emotions, or just needing clarity, cracking a joke brings laughter, and helps to lighten the spirit,” he explained.

“Grieving is a tough journey, and laughter is a powerful tool to navigate through it.”

Piven has drawn inspiration from iconic comedians such as Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin. His comedic repertoire showcases a mixture of personal anecdotes, impressions, and original characters.

This comedian’s tour spans several cities, including hotspot venues from New York City to West Palm Beach, Florida, and on to Irvine, California, continuing through May of the following year.

Jeremy Piven’s fondness for performing arts originated with his mother. In the 1970s, Joyce and her late husband, Byrne Piven, established the renowned Piven Theatre Workshop, nurturing talents such as John Cusack, Joan Cusack, and Aidan Quinn among others.

Decades earlier, they were instrumental in founding the Playwrights Theatre Club, co-led by Paul Sills, the visionary behind The Second City.

Joyce’s unique teaching methods were showcased in the book she co-authored with Byrne in 2012, titled In the Studio With Joyce Piven.

Following Joyce’s passing earlier this year, Piven expressed his love and admiration for her through a touching message on Instagram, sharing cherished photos of their time together.

“Though she was my mother, her spirit as a remarkable human being inspired countless individuals,” he wrote. “An acting teacher celebrating her students’ growth. She instilled respect and integrity within the craft, reminding us of our fortune to perform.”

He reflected, “In our rehearsals, she immersed herself into every character, skillfully adapting to any necessary accent.”

He concluded with heartfelt warmth: “She remained graceful until her last breath, ever the educator… Life is unpredictable, yet we have lost an extraordinary soul. She’s rejoicing with my father, and it’s a reminder to be kind to one another.”
