Investigative Journalism Makes a Comeback in Panama
In a bold resurgence of investigative reporting that stands in stark contrast to mainstream media, acclaimed journalist Lara Logan has returned to the field, delivering exclusive insights for from one of the world’s most precarious and politically charged areas.
Logan has embedded herself in the dense jungles of Panama, shedding light on the extensive repercussions of President Joe Biden’s controversial border policies while also illustrating how the leadership of former President Donald Trump is paving the way for viable solutions.
“For four years under Joe Biden, this was one of the main corridors into the U.S. for illegal immigrants, foreign spies, soldiers, and terrorists,” Logan stated during her interview with .
As previously noted, Logan’s expedition symbolizes a courageous return to investigative journalism that corporate media has largely shunned.
Deep Dive into Ancon Hill
In a gripping episode of her show Going Rogue with Lara Logan, she takes viewers on a journey through the lush jungles of Panama, specifically to Ancon Hill—historically a key U.S. military observation site during the construction of the Panama Canal.
Lara Logan: We are here on the road in Panama, approaching the entrance to a tunnel system within this hill that overlooks the city of Panama.
This location, known as Ancon Hill, was once a critical strategic point for the U.S. during the canal’s construction, serving not only for oversight but also for security.
There is purportedly a tunnel system and command center that extends deep into this hill. Standing at approximately 650 feet above sea level, I’m about to show you the entrance, which is quite visible.
The scale of what was constructed here is immense, and the future of this infrastructure is uncertain. It was formally returned to Panama, a transfer initiated under an agreement made by the U.S. that placed them in charge of security in the region.
Former President Jimmy Carter was instrumental in this transfer in the late 1970s. Strikingly, the U.S. devoted the ensuing two decades to training Panamanian personnel to assume control of canal operations.
Recently, Chinese influence has surged. They have secured legal rights to operate a cruise ship terminal and effectively taken control of two ports previously managed by Hutchison, a Hong Kong-based company. With the return of Hong Kong to China, it’s no surprise that these enterprises are now heavily influenced by Chinese interests.
This shift represents a significant change in the geopolitical landscape. Some view it favorably, while others raise concerns about the implications of such influence.
China’s reach extends into cultural and financial sectors, as well as strategic infrastructure. This complex scenario invites varied opinions, and the Chinese government excels in shaping the narrative surrounding it. Our journey has yielded invaluable insights, made possible by the support of . This is independent, first-hand reporting from the ground.
