Elaine Merk Binder, one of the final surviving Munchkin actors from the iconic film The Wizard of Oz, has sadly passed away at the age of 94. Her death has sparked a renewed examination of the troubling abuse scandals that allegedly overshadowed the production of this beloved classic.

Judy Garland, then just 16, endured harassment and groping during the filming.

Binder was merely eight years old when she was selected for the 1939 musical masterpiece, bringing joy as part of the Munchkin ensemble in Munchkinland. However, the innocent facade of the production was marred by troubling behaviors occurring behind the scenes. Reports have surfaced detailing alcohol-fueled chaos, harassment, and exploitation among the 124 little people cast as Munchkins.

A historian noted, “Elaine, like most of the children involved, was largely shielded from the darker aspects of the production. However, the legacy left behind by the Munchkin cast is undeniably marred by disturbing revelations that even challenge the typical narratives of old Hollywood.”

Another researcher commented, “Her passing brings to mind the suffering endured by Judy Garland, who at a tender age of 16 was already confronting harassment on the set. While the Munchkins filled their roles with lightheartedness, there’s an underlying story fraught with abuse.”

In an unfinished manuscript titled Judy and I, Garland’s third husband, Sid Luft, recounted her painful admission of abuse occurring during filming. He noted, “The men were rascals; they felt emboldened to misbehave because of their size.” Luft disclosed that Garland, then still small at just 4 feet 11 inches, experienced inappropriate behavior from older male cast mates.

This misconduct was not isolated to Garland alone; other crew members remembered the Munchkin actors indulging in excessive drinking and chaotic behavior which led to them returning to set in hangover states. According to Luft, the Munchkins made Garland’s life intolerable with their inappropriate advances.

Producer Mervyn LeRoy remarked, “Fights, wild parties, and all sorts of madness ensued. The local police often found themselves called to the hotel to handle disputes.” Garland herself lamented the drunken behavior of the Munchkin cast, describing them as “drunks” who were frequently caught by police using “butterfly nets.”

Luft alleged that Munchkin actors molested Garland during production.

The tumultuous atmosphere was fueled by despair and a sense of rebellion. Many Munchkin actors faced limited career options during the economic hardship of the Great Depression, all while being bound by contracts held by Leo Singer, a talent manager who profited immensely from their careers.

They earned a meager salary of $50 weekly—less than a third of what the dog Toto earned—while Singer took a significant portion of their earnings. For decades, rumors surrounding orgies, prostitution, and even threats of violence circulated within Hollywood. One Munchkin, Charles Kelley, allegedly confronted another cast member over a personal dispute, leading to him bringing loaded firearms to the set.

Makeup artist Jack Dawn recounted an incident where he had to save a drunken actor who had become trapped in a toilet bowl. The chaotic environment blurred the lines between entertainment and exploitation, with studio staff often treating the adult Munchkin actors as if they were children, sometimes confusing them with actual minors working on the set.

Wardrobe employees were shocked to discover that the “shy boys” they were undressing were, in fact, grown men.

Binder bravely declined a contract with Paramount to follow a path of education and theology.

Garland, though deeply affected by her experiences, managed to express gratitude towards the Munchkins by gifting each a signed photograph and chocolates at the conclusion of filming. Unfortunately, Garland would soon seek psychiatric assistance as the burdens of fame and her haunting memories grew overwhelming.

As for Binder, she later reflected positively on her experiences, cherishing the moment when she and seven other child dancers were cast. Opting for a stable future, she rejected a lucrative contract offer from Paramount to instead pursue higher education and eventually contributed to fields in computer science and theology.
