The NYPD has taken a proactive approach to combat pickpocketing in tourist-heavy areas like Times Square and Rockefeller Center by positioning an electronic billboard truck in front of Radio City Music Hall in Midtown. The billboard boldly displayed the message, “Beware of pickpockets,” in an effort to alert visitors and residents to the prevalent crime.

Pickpocketing has been a long-standing issue in popular tourist spots, leading the NYPD to establish a specialized plainclothes “pickpocket unit” to patrol these areas and catch thieves in the act. Despite the challenges, the 18th Precinct, which includes Radio City, has seen a decrease in overall crime this year. Petit larceny, which encompasses pickpocketing and retail theft, has decreased by 18% compared to the same period last year.

While the precinct has experienced an increase in robberies by 9%, the recent efforts of the NYPD have led to a significant decrease in this crime during a 28-day period. The success in reducing crime has been attributed to thorough police work and continuous follow-up by Midtown North precinct personnel.

Residents and visitors alike have shared their experiences and emphasized the importance of vigilance in crowded areas. Beverly Paterson, a retired teacher, highlighted the need for caution, especially during the holiday season and in touristy locations. She emphasized the importance of keeping valuables secure and being aware of one’s surroundings.

Similarly, Bob Kuppelmeyer, a retired defense industry employee, stressed the need for individuals to be wary of potential scammers and keep a watchful eye on their belongings. He advised keeping wallets in front pockets and staying alert in crowded environments.

The presence of the NYPD’s warning sign outside Radio City Music Hall prompted discussions among tourists and locals about the prevalence of pickpocketing. Visitors, like Ella Worstell, shared their experiences of encountering pickpocketing in other countries and the measures they have taken to protect their belongings.

Overall, the NYPD’s efforts to raise awareness about pickpocketing serve as a reminder for everyone to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to safeguard their possessions in bustling areas. By staying vigilant and informed, residents and tourists can help deter thieves and ensure a safer environment for all.
