A fierce wildfire near Reno, Nevada, has displaced tens of thousands of
residents and is poised to expand due to gusty winds and parched vegetation
that are intensifying the flames.
The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), a federal body responsible for
monitoring wildfires in the U.S., has
classified the
fire as “extreme.” According to the
Reno Gazette Journal,
approximately
90,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate, and at least six individuals
have sustained injuries, including three first responders.
Known as the Hawk Fire, the blaze erupted on August 22 and has human
origins, according to local officials. However, the exact cause or whether
it was intentional remains unclear. The fire has engulfed over 15,000 acres
in the Reno vicinity, based on data from
InciWeb,
a national wildfire data tracker, and remains completely uncontained.

To the north of the city, another fire that ignited earlier this month has
been nearly fully contained, after burning through approximately 94,000
acres.
The region has been experiencing winds with gusts reaching 35 miles per
hour, which have facilitated the spread of sparks. Additionally, the
relatively low humidity of 20 to 25 percent has resulted in extremely dry
conditions, further exacerbating the fires. National Weather Service
meteorologist Tony Fuentes notes that these conditions are “pretty typical”
for this time of year in the area.
Local officials
announced
on social media that the Hawk Fire is projected to “continue making moderate
to high-intensity runs in pockets of dense fuels” over the next 12 hours.
“Hot, dry, and breezy conditions are expected to continue supporting active
fire behavior over the next 48 hours,” officials stated. “The fire has the
potential to spread northeast and northwest, and conditions remain dynamic
and subject to rapid change.”
As of August 24, the United States has experienced close to 51,000 wildfires
this year, burning over 7.8 million acres, according to
the NIFC. This
represents 129 percent of the 10-year average for the number of wildfires
and 168 percent of the average acreage burned. In comparison, from January 1
to August 24, 2025, there were 45,331 fires, consuming 4,065,073 acres.
Among the most severe wildfires this year are three in Washington State,
each having destroyed over 100,000 acres. Scientists have indicated that the
state’s wildfire season serves as a warning for the rest of the U.S., as
climate change accelerates, leading to more frequent, longer-lasting, and
more destructive wildfires.
