A popular Canterbury restaurant, Carnegies Restaurant, suffered severe damage in a fire this morning. The incident occurred on Allandale Rd in Fairlie at 6:30 am, with fire crews responding to the scene promptly.
Upon arrival, the building was engulfed in flames, prompting the deployment of five fire trucks and a support vehicle from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). Four hours later, crews were still present at the scene, working to fully extinguish the fire.
By 10:30 am, the fire had been mostly contained, although significant damage to the restaurant’s ceiling was evident. The smell of smoke lingered in the air, permeating throughout the small town of Fairlie.
Fortunately, no individuals were inside the building at the time of the fire. A fire investigator is currently on-site, determining the cause of the blaze.
