Faith leaders from various religious backgrounds in the UK have united to urge the British Government to take action towards a global treaty that will put an end to the use of fossil fuels. The joint open letter, signed by representatives from a diverse range of faith groups, emphasizes the moral imperative of transitioning to renewable energy in a fair and sustainable manner.

Among the signatories are prominent figures such as Kamran Shezad from the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Avnish Thakrar of Hindu Climate Action, Right Reverend John Arnold, the Bishop of Salford, Naomi Verber from EcoJudaism, and Jamie Cresswell from the Centre for Applied Buddhism. Together, they stress the importance of utilizing the profits generated by the fossil fuel industry to create a more equitable future for all.

Dr. Shannon Shah, director of Faith for the Climate and a signatory of the open letter, highlights the moral obligation to address the environmental damage caused by the extraction and exploitation of natural resources. She calls on the UK Government to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, a global initiative championed by climate vulnerable Pacific island states. This treaty aims to swiftly and fairly phase out the use of fossil fuels worldwide, while ensuring a just transition for affected communities.

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty has garnered support from 16 national governments and various cities in the UK, including Birmingham, Glasgow, and London. Trade unions, such as Public Services International and UNISON, have also thrown their weight behind the campaign, advocating for a fossil-free future and a sustainable global transition.

Brendan Montague, the editor of The Ecologist, has drawn attention to this crucial issue in his article, which is based on a press release from Faith for the Climate. The collective efforts of faith leaders, environmental activists, and trade unions underscore the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and working towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
