The community is rallying behind a New Zealand woman, Destiny Otton-Rakuraku, who was allegedly set on fire by a man in Australia. Friends and family are shocked and traumatized by the horrific incident that took place at her home in Kingston, near Brisbane. Destiny, a 34-year-old mother-of-two and support worker, is currently hospitalized with serious injuries.

“I’m devastated… just numbness,” expressed Alison, Destiny’s mother, to Seven News. “She’s strong. We’ll be strong for our girl.”

The accused, Renata Edward Manning, 36, faces charges of attempted murder and assault against Destiny and another woman. Supporters filled the courtroom for Manning’s initial appearance, where he did not appear in person or via videolink.

According to police reports, the altercation occurred on Saturday morning, leading to Manning using a lighter on Destiny. She was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital in a serious condition.

Court documents reveal additional charges against Manning for assaulting another woman on separate occasions. The defense did not apply for bail during the court session, requesting an adjournment for a legal aid application to be processed.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop scheduled the next hearing for March 12, keeping Manning in custody. Meanwhile, a fundraiser for Destiny’s medical expenses has garnered significant support, reflecting the community’s solidarity with her during this challenging time.

As the family friend who initiated the fundraiser noted, Destiny is known for her compassionate nature and is bravely navigating through this ordeal for the sake of her family.
