Tragedy struck on a Georgia highway Monday afternoon as a family of eight lost their lives in a catastrophic six-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer. The victims included a pregnant mother, her daughter, a grandmother, and five children.
Driver Kane Aaron Hammock is accused of driving too closely when he collided with a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan, killing all eight passengers inside. This impact initiated a destructive “chain reaction” involving four other vehicles on I-85 near Commerce, Georgia, around 4 p.m., officials stated.
The crash scene was approximately 66 miles northeast of Atlanta, where the bodies of the deceased family members were found.
As of Tuesday, authorities had not released the names of the victims; however, family members have since come forward to share their identities.
Family members Kenia Ramirez and Darwin Ventura were tragically discovered inside their van, as reported by Atlanta News First.
The couple was raising their daughter Kayle, who also died in the crash, along with Ramirez’s mother, Sonia Maribel Ramirez, and her children: Justin, Andy, Natali, and Evan.
All eight individuals were pronounced dead at the crash scene.
A significant fire broke out in both the van and the truck as a result of the collision.
Mike Rullan, who witnessed the aftermath, described the horrific impact, stating, “The violence of the impact was indescribable. It took me by surprise.”
Rullan, who became entangled in the incident, said the van was unrecognizable due to the extent of the damage.
“It was complete chaos. The wreckage spread across the entire interstate,” he recounted.
Simultaneously, a van operated by Furkids, a no-kill animal shelter based in Georgia, was transporting 37 cats to Vermont when it became part of the crash.
The van driver sustained injuries, and reports indicate that 32 of the cats are accounted for, according to updates on Facebook.
“We are performing triage on all the cats involved to assess their injuries and necessary medical care. We’re committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our staff and the animals we care for,” the shelter’s statement read.
Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details regarding the victims’ identities, but indicated one of those deceased may have been pregnant, pending autopsy results.
The ages of the children ranged from 2 to 16 years, according to reports.
Hammock, 33, has been arrested and is facing multiple charges: eight counts of vehicular homicide, one count of feticide, one count of following too closely, one count of operating without registration, and one count of failing to exercise proper care while driving.
He is currently in custody at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is conducting an investigation into the accident, while both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Georgia State Patrol have initiated a joint safety inquiry.
