A family from Melbourne, Australia, had a nightmare experience during a stopover in Indonesia on their way back from a holiday. What was supposed to be a routine stop turned into a devastating scam that cost them $28,000.

The trouble began when the family of five landed in Jakarta and accidentally picked up the wrong suitcase, a black Samsonite brand. Upon realizing the mistake at their hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, they handed over the suitcase to hotel staff. Luckily, the suitcase could be tracked using Apple AirTags.

The tracking revealed that the suitcase had traveled over 2,000 kilometers to Sam Ratulangi International Airport in North Sulawesi. The hotel informed the family that the suitcase could be returned for a small fee. However, when the family tried to make the payment using a credit card, they fell victim to a scam.

In a span of 30 minutes, scammers managed to drain $28,000 from their credit card through four transactions. The family was left shocked and devastated by the experience. Despite their efforts to stop the transactions and seek help from the hotel and credit card company, the money was gone.

The family is now embroiled in a dispute with the bank that issued the credit card, as well as the hotel chain. They have also lodged a complaint with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) in hopes of getting some answers and resolution to their predicament.

The incident has left the family emotionally and financially distressed. They are facing additional costs and interest charges while they wait for the situation to be resolved. The family’s trust in well-known brands like Google, The Ritz-Carlton, and Qantas Titanium has been shattered.

Despite their ordeal, the family is speaking out to warn other travelers about the risks of falling victim to scams while abroad. They hope that by sharing their story, they can prevent others from going through a similar ordeal.
