George Clooney and Adam Sandler have joined forces in the cinematic venture Jay Kelly— a project that has sparked fan speculation about Sandler clinching his inaugural Oscar.
The trailer, which was unveiled on Monday, September 29, under the direction of Noah Baumbach, has many aficionados whispering predictions that the Academy Awards might finally welcome Sandler into their hallowed ranks.
“I mean, can we just give this guy an Oscar already?” one eager viewer commented on YouTube. “I have long held that comedic actors excel in dramatic roles. Honestly, he deserved one for Uncut Gems.”

A third projection suggests that Jay Kelly is likely to emerge as a major contender for BEST PICTURE at the 2026 Oscars.

The film portrays a movie star, played by Clooney, taking a reflective journey across Europe as he evaluates his life and professional achievements. Along the way, viewers meet his key collaborators: his manager, Ron—a role Sandler embraces—and his publicist, Liz, played by Laura Dern, both integral to his ascent in showbiz.
“Jay Kelly, you look stunning. You’re the epitome of the American dream, the last of the great movie icons,” Sandler, aged 59, remarks to Clooney, 64, in the tantalizing trailer.
The trailer tantalizingly showcases Jay’s life, from his early acting days to fatherhood, complete with red carpet walks and glitzy premieres.
“Lately, I feel as though my life has lost its authenticity. Memories flood back… almost like I’m starring in my own film,” the character confides.
This cinematic spectacle is further enhanced by a stellar ensemble, featuring Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Greta Gerwig, Isla Fisher, Louis Partridge, and Tom Francis.
Sandler shared insights on embracing this more profound role, revealing that it resonated deeply with the many people he’s encountered throughout his acting career.
“I know a plethora of Rons,” he remarked to Netflix this month. “I’ve met numerous wonderful individuals who prioritized my well-being over their own needs to ensure my journey was smooth.”
Prior to this, Sandler’s fans were left aghast when he didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for his stellar performance in the 2019 film Uncut Gems. In that gripping thriller, directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, Sandler embodied Howard Ratner, a Jewish jeweler ensnared in debt due to his gambling vice.
Sandler humorously addressed the Oscar oversight for Uncut Gems on X, quipping, “Bad news: Sandman gets no love from the Academy. Good news: Sandman can ditch the formal wear.”
Anticipation builds as Jay Kelly gears up for its theatrical debut on November 14, before streaming on Netflix starting December 5.
