Far-right activist Laura Loomer found herself in hot water on social media platform X after a heated exchange with billionaire owner Elon Musk and the MAGA base regarding the issue of highly skilled foreign workers. Loomer revealed in a post on Friday that she was suspended for 12 hours for speaking out against what she perceives as a technocratic takeover of the country and the White House.
In her post, Loomer questioned the platform’s commitment to free speech, highlighting the irony of being punished for expressing her views. She emphasized the need for a transparent discussion about Big Tech’s influence within the MAGA community. Additionally, X removed her blue checkmark and deactivated her subscriptions, a feature that allows users to monetize their posts by offering paid subscriptions to their feeds.
The controversy ignited when Loomer criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for artificial intelligence adviser, Sriram Krishnan, who hails from India and has supported policies that would attract more highly skilled immigrants to the United States. Loomer’s comments escalated into a series of posts targeting Musk and making derogatory remarks about highly skilled immigrants.
This is not the first time Loomer has faced repercussions on social media platforms for her controversial views. Known for spreading far-right conspiracy theories and anti-immigrant sentiments, Loomer was banned from several platforms in 2020. Despite her contentious history, she maintains a close relationship with Trump and even accompanied him to a presidential debate in September.
Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022 was motivated, in part, by his belief that the platform was overly restrictive in blocking users. He aimed to create a space for open dialogue and free speech. However, the clash between Trump supporters in Silicon Valley and the anti-immigrant faction within the MAGA base underscores the challenges facing the Republican Party as it navigates a diverse coalition.
While Trump has not publicly addressed the online dispute, a spokesperson for his transition team referenced a post by incoming White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller, citing Trump’s previous remarks on American innovation. Musk, on the other hand, did not directly comment on Loomer’s suspension but reminded users that the platform’s algorithm reduces the reach of accounts that are frequently blocked or muted by credible users.
In response to the controversy, Musk advised users to ignore Loomer’s attention-seeking behavior. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tension between different factions within the Republican Party and the complexities of managing diverse perspectives within a political movement.
