Mr. Morrison was rounding up hoggets for shearing on his farm in Waikaka Valley when the accident occurred about three weeks ago. While driving the quad bike downhill with a trailer carrying dogs, he braked suddenly on the hard, rain-soaked ground, causing the bike to slip into a strainer post and resulting in a broken leg.
As a result of his injury, Mr. Morrison is now in a cast and unable to put weight on his leg for six weeks. He emphasized the importance of considering the risks on the farm and taking necessary precautions to avoid accidents that can have significant impacts on both individuals and the farm business.
Lindy Nelson, farms chairwoman and farmer, also highlighted the need for farmers to prioritize safety, especially during the busy summer season. She emphasized the importance of pausing to plan, sharing plans with others, and ensuring that jobs are set up correctly before starting work.
With summer being a peak period for injuries and fatalities in the farming sector, it is crucial for farmers to invest in safety measures and take the time to assess risks and ensure a safe working environment. By implementing simple safety measures and fostering a culture of awareness and prevention, farmers can reduce the likelihood of accidents and protect themselves, their families, and their communities.
As the farming community prepares for the holiday season, it is essential to prioritize safety, especially with the presence of family members and visitors who may be unfamiliar with farm operations. By taking a moment to assess risks, communicate effectively, and support each other, farmers can ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for everyone.
