A renowned former Yale University professor has shared the reasons behind her decision to move to Canada with her husband, in response to President Donald Trump’s potential second term.
Marci Shore, an expert on totalitarianism, and her spouse, tyranny specialist Timothy Snyder, recently announced their move to the University of Toronto.
Speaking in an interview published by The Guardian, Shore expressed growing concern about the normalization of extremism in American politics, attributing it to Trump’s brazen tactics of blatant wrongdoing.
Shore admitted that her unease began after Trump’s victory in the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton, although Snyder initially advocated for staying in the U.S.
“I fear that we are on the brink of a civil war, given the prevalence of guns and gun violence in the country. There is an acceptance of violence that is uniquely American, which Europeans find perplexing,” Shore cautioned.
Reflecting on the 2024 election, Shore expressed her disgust towards those who voted for Trump, stating, “They had ample time to reflect, yet they made their choice. That revulsion lingered within me, leading me to conclude: ‘If this is what people desire, then count me out.’”
