The Fashion Institute of Technology’s Future of Fashion Show Highlights Student Talent
Sixty-seven members of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s graduating class recently showcased their creativity and talent at the Future of Fashion show. Sponsored by Macy’s, the event featured 82 looks in five categories—sportswear, children’s wear, knitwear, intimate apparel, and special occasion wear. Macy’s also selected designs from some students to put into production.
This year’s class of students at the Fashion Institute of Technology demonstrated a more traditional approach in terms of color palette and silhouette, with a focus on craftsmanship and materials. While there were no overt explorations of gender or references to the manosphere, the students did not shy away from addressing topical subjects in their designs.
Dean of the School of Art and Design, Troy Richards, noted that this year’s students showed a renewed interest in hand skills and material exploration following the challenges of the pandemic. The designs of students like Allison Margaret Smith, who used a variety of natural materials in her collection, reflected this focus on craftsmanship and texture.
Several students drew inspiration from their heritage and family roots in their designs. Evelyn Hernandez from Mexico created a leg shawl, while Jegu Kim reinterpreted elements of traditional Korean attire in a poufy ensemble. Jennifer Sze paid tribute to her father, a stone mason, by incorporating his tools and materials into a sculptural pleated ensemble.
Other students looked to cultural traditions and historical references for inspiration. Amanda McVey explored the traditions of the Scottish diaspora in a shearling topper, while Leyi Huang drew from religious practices of ancient Tibet in her evening looks. Bilegbayar Senegedorj was inspired by the shamanic traditions of the Mongolian steppe, and Servan Bilici transformed a traditional jacket and pants into a delicate and unexpected design inspired by the tale of “Şahmeran.”
The Future of Fashion show at the Fashion Institute of Technology showcased the diverse talents and inspirations of the graduating class, highlighting their skillful craftsmanship and creative vision.
