Wisconsin prosecutors have recently charged Jeffrey Rupnow, the father of a teenage girl who committed a tragic school shooting last year, with allowing her access to the semiautomatic pistols used in the attack. The criminal complaint against Jeffrey Rupnow sheds light on the struggles faced by his daughter, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, as she grappled with her parents’ divorce. She expressed her anger and distress in a written piece titled “War Against Humanity.”

Natalie meticulously planned the school shooting, even building a cardboard model of the school and scheduling the attack to end with her own suicide. The prosecutors filed the complaint against Jeffrey Rupnow, charging him with two counts of intentionally giving a dangerous weapon to a person under 18, causing death, and contributing to the delinquency of a child. These charges are serious felonies, and Jeffrey Rupnow was arrested and taken to the Dane County Jail.

The devastating school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison on December 16 resulted in the deaths of teacher Erin Michelle West and 14-year-old student Rubi Bergara. Natalie also injured six others before taking her own life. The investigation recovered 20 shell casings from the study hall where the shooting took place, along with the pistols used by Natalie.

Jeffrey Rupnow revealed to investigators that Natalie had been struggling with the divorce and had exhibited self-harming behavior in the past. Despite her challenges, he tried to bond with her through guns, believing it was a way to connect with her. He stored the pistols in a gun safe, providing Natalie with access if needed. However, he expressed regret over teaching her gun safety, calling it his biggest mistake.

Natalie’s written document titled “War Against Humanity” revealed her admiration for school shooters and her troubled thoughts about humanity. She detailed her plans for the attack, including a schedule and a chilling notation indicating her readiness for death. Her fascination with school shootings and weapons was evident in her online communications with individuals worldwide.

The charges against Jeffrey Rupnow are part of a concerning trend of parents being held accountable in school shooting cases. Previous instances include parents of school shooters in Michigan and Georgia facing charges related to their children’s actions. The tragic consequences of gun violence in schools highlight the importance of responsible gun ownership and ensuring the safety of all individuals, especially vulnerable youth.
