Father’s Day weekend shootings soar 100% in Chicago as city sees bloodiest day since 2024
SHARE

During the Father’s Day weekend in Chicago, 42 individuals were either shot or killed throughout the city. This figure represents a 100% rise compared to the same period last year, as per preliminary data. The total number of victims might have stayed under 50 due to rainy weather, which led to no reported shootings after 6:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Significantly, 26 people were shot on Friday alone, marking the highest single-day shooting victim count since July 5, 2024, according to HeyJackass.com, a site that tracks Chicago crime statistics independently.

Although this year’s Father’s Day weekend figures are below long-term averages, the 100% year-over-year surge poses a challenge for Mayor Brandon Johnson, who aims to demonstrate a reduction in violent crime throughout the city.

Father’s Day weekend is traditionally seen as one of Chicago’s most violent times of the year by CPD personnel and crime reporters, a fact that may surprise those unfamiliar with the city’s seasonal crime trends. This weekend was no exception.

A mass shooting in Roseland on Friday night contributed to nearly a third of the weekend’s shooting victims. At least two gunmen opened fire on a large crowd in a parking lot, discharging over 100 rounds and injuring 12 people. By Saturday morning, more shooting victims were reported than during the entire Father’s Day weekend in 2025.

The incident took place shortly after 11 p.m. on the 200 block of West 95th Street. Responding officers found a 32-year-old woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a 44-year-old man with four graze wounds. Both were hospitalized in good condition, according to CPD.

As the area was secured, more victims started arriving at hospitals across the city and suburbs. The total number of victims from the incident rose to 12, with an additional victim refusing treatment. CPD did not detail the nature of his injuries.

Witnesses recounted to police that a red SUV approached the crowd, and two shooters fired from each side of the vehicle. The gunmen fired numerous rounds before escaping east on 95th Street. CPD cordoned off the block between Yale and Princeton avenues, marking over 100 evidence points, many associated with rifle shell casings.

Editor’s note: HeyJackass data incorporates shootings on expressways in city limits, which CPD excludes as the Illinois State Police handles them. The weekend’s totals may change as investigations continue and victims’ conditions evolve.
