On February 19, 1878, Thomas Edison received a patent for the phonograph, a groundbreaking invention.

In 1473, Nicolaus Copernicus, the renowned astronomer, was born in Torun, Poland.

In 1847, rescuers reached the snowbound members of the Donner Party near the California-Nevada border after nearly four months.

In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, leading to the internment of 125,000 people of Japanese descent during World War II.

In 1945, Operation Detachment began with U.S. Marines landing at Iwo Jima in a successful battle against Japanese forces.
