An international graduate student at the University of Minnesota was detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, sparking reactions from various entities including the university president, graduate labor union, and Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
University president Rebecca Cunningham released a statement informing the student body that the unidentified student was taken into custody at an off-campus residence. She emphasized that the university was unaware of the incident beforehand and did not share any information with federal authorities prior to the arrest.
Details about the student’s nationality and the reasons for their detention were not immediately disclosed. The student was enrolled in the Carlson School of Management, according to university spokesperson Jake Ricker as reported by The New York Times.
This incident adds to a series of similar occurrences where ICE has targeted international students, professors, or recent graduates at various American institutions such as Brown University, Columbia University, Tufts University, and the University of Alabama.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio boasted about the revocation of at least 300 student visas since President Donald Trump’s tenure began. The administration has been specifically targeting individuals who have participated in protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Rubio indicated that the government is actively seeking more individuals to target daily.
The graduate labor union at the university condemned the actions of the Trump administration in a statement shared with The Minnesota Star Tribune. They expressed that these actions infringe upon civil liberties and academic freedom, stating their support for international students within the university community.
Governor Walz, who previously ran as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, took to social media to address the situation. He mentioned that he had discussions with officials from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the ICE arrest in Minnesota.
In response to the incident, Governor Walz highlighted the University of Minnesota’s role as an international hub for education and research. He stressed the importance of providing answers regarding the status of students studying with visas at the university.
This event underscores the ongoing challenges faced by international students in the current political climate, raising concerns about academic freedom and civil rights within educational institutions.
