During a detention hearing on Monday, federal prosecutors disclosed that Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man accused of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course, had written a letter months prior outlining his intention to kill the ex-president.
This letter became a focal point for prosecutors seeking Routh’s detention pending trial after the incident on Sept. 15.
The note, addressed to “Dear World,” explicitly stated that it was an “assassination attempt on Donald Trump,” with Routh expressing remorse for failing and urging others to complete the job for a reward of $150,000.
Court documents obtained by JS revealed that witnesses informed investigators that Routh had left a box at a witness’s home containing ammunition, a metal pipe, phones, and the letter several months before.
Prosecutors alleged that a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel protruding from the trees near where Trump was playing golf at his West Palm Beach club. Routh was seen fleeing the scene and later arrested after being stopped by police while driving a black Nissan Xterra SUV.
Routh, a convicted felon, faced charges of firearm possession and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. The discovery of the box left at the witness’s home and the contents inside added weight to the case against him.
Further investigations revealed Routh’s extensive planning, including a handwritten list of Trump’s whereabouts, a search for travel routes to Mexico, and notes on Ukraine and combat operations.
Routh’s previous felony convictions and his history of weapon possession raised concerns about his intentions and capabilities in carrying out the assassination attempt.
Despite the evidence against him, Routh’s attorney did not provide a comment to JS, and the case was set to proceed in court with potential additional charges pending.
The FBI’s findings, including Routh’s fingerprints on the rifle and his writings advocating for Trump’s assassination, painted a disturbing picture of his motives and actions.
Routh’s court appearance on Monday marked a critical juncture in the legal proceedings, with significant penalties looming for the firearm charges he faced.
